{"id":1618,"date":"2013-04-17T11:29:23","date_gmt":"2013-04-17T15:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tr10023.com\/?p=1618"},"modified":"2013-05-10T20:23:30","modified_gmt":"2013-05-11T00:23:30","slug":"laughton-speaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.tr10023.com\/?p=1618","title":{"rendered":"Laughton Speaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the 1950s, <a title=\"Charles Laughton in \u2018Witness for the Prosecution\u2019\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tr10023.com\/?p=1176\">Charles Laughton<\/a> made a number of successful reading tours that eventually led to a two-record \u00a0album, &#8220;The Story-Teller .\u00a0.\u00a0. a Session with Charles Laughton,&#8221; which was released in 1962, shortly after Laughton&#8217;s death. \u00a0The album has not been released on CD, but it is now available in its entirety online. \u00a0You can find it by following this link:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/TheStory-teller\">http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/TheStory-teller<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Laughton-The-Storyteller.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1621\" alt=\"Laughton The Storyteller\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Laughton-The-Storyteller.jpg?resize=625%2C625\" width=\"625\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Laughton-The-Storyteller.jpg?w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Laughton-The-Storyteller.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Laughton-The-Storyteller.jpg?resize=300%2C300 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Laughton-The-Storyteller.jpg?resize=624%2C624 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not a lot to say about the following clips, other than they&#8217;re wonderful and demonstrate Laughton at his best. \u00a0The first is from &#8220;The Story-Teller.&#8221; \u00a0It&#8217;s made up of three selections near the start of the album. \u00a0I&#8217;m not so fond of the last three minutes of this clip (Psalm 104), but the first fifteen minutes are quite extraordinary. \u00a0He reads Kerouac so well, he makes the prose sound a lot better than it actually is.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LOPv55Tsol0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This next one is from &#8220;Ruggles of Red Gap.&#8221; \u00a0Out of context, I&#8217;m afraid it seems awfully sentimental, but I&#8217;m willing to risk it because Laughton handles the material so brilliantly. \u00a0You can hear from the dialogue that precedes and follows Laughton&#8217;s speech that the script is very funny; the picture is not sentimental, but some of the directorial choices are.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yHIjrZCAYp0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a shame that Leo McCarey, who had little respect for actors (whom he considered children &#8212; and <em>spoiled<\/em> children, at that), decided to take the focus off Laughton and place it on the roughnecks who gather round him as he speaks the immortal words of Honest Abe. \u00a0How much better it would have been to let Laughton do the entire speech in one or two takes, and then to reveal that his delivery (and Lincoln&#8217;s words) had drawn a crowd .\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0! \u00a0McCarey, alas, would have none of it. \u00a0Many of the shots of Laughton are from behind, so we see the back of his head and the wonder-stricken rabble who listen to his recitation: \u00a0this is not only disrespectful to Laughton, but to us, the audience, as well: \u00a0McCarey\u00a0doesn&#8217;t trust us to be moved by what we hear without visual cues from a crowd of extras. \u00a0It&#8217;s strange that he was responsible for a number of very funny comedies early in his career when you consider what he eventually became. \u00a0He achieved his apotheosis (or nadir, depending on your point of view) seventeen years later with the red-baiting agitprop melodrama, &#8220;My Son John,&#8221; in which Dean Jagger whacks his Commie rat bastard son Robert Walker over the head with a Bible. \u00a0McCarey\u00a0produced and directed it, wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>Jagger:<\/strong> Listen, son: take the First Commandment. Do you believe in the Lord thy God? What about honoring your father and mother? \u00a0He doesn&#8217;t: \u00a0he says nothing; he just stands there with the Bible over his head looking like a jerk. \u00a0Robert Walker recovers in a second and says, &#8220;What page was <em>that<\/em> on?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1694\" style=\"width: 1145px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/My-Son-John-04.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1694\" class=\" wp-image-1694  \" alt=\"My son . . . a Commie!\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/My-Son-John-04.jpg?resize=625%2C470\" width=\"625\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/My-Son-John-04.jpg?w=1135 1135w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/My-Son-John-04.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/My-Son-John-04.jpg?resize=1024%2C770 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.tr10023.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/My-Son-John-04.jpg?resize=624%2C469 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Robert Walker, Dean Jagger: Bible school for Commies!<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>. . . but I&#8217;m digressing. \u00a0I only wanted to make the point that Laughton, Lincoln, and the Gettysburg Address would have been better served by a better director who had more faith in good actors, good material and the good people who went to see his pictures. \u00a0But I suppose it&#8217;s really Laughton&#8217;s fault; it was he who insisted that McCarey direct the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, here&#8217;s Laughton in O.Henry&#8217;s &#8220;The Cop and the Anthem&#8221; (from the 20th Century-Fox 1952 release, &#8220;Full House&#8221;). \u00a0He&#8217;s funny and poignant and even manages to upstage the young Marilyn Monroe, who plays a small part about ten minutes in. \u00a0To see him upstage Marilyn is as startling and funny as the time Jack Benny upstaged a penguin. \u00a0It&#8217;s also interesting to notice that she was a much better actress before Lee Strasberg got his hooks into her.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; because, as I always say, if a thing is worth doing, it&#8217;s worth overdoing. \u00a0Honestly, I didn&#8217;t mean to dwell on it so much, but I just can&#8217;t stop laughing about it.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center;
